Star Frames

These star frames were constructed for the Utah Shakespeare Festival's production of Silent Sky. Star frames were used to view photographic star plates to then analyze the data. This project was first prototyped and then edited with insights from the stage management team.

Prototype

This was the first prototype. It was developed from drawings and images provided to me from propsmaster Kat Kruetz. The base plate was not very wide and had tendancy to wobble. The frame was not nearly long enough, and the dado was only just wide enough for the plexi to slide in and out, there was hardly any wiggle room.

Feedback and rough work.

We then went the prototype off to rehearsal after taking down dimensions. We needed a wider slot for the plexiglass, a wider base, and a way to pull out the plates. This photo contains all of the pieces then cut and partially assembled to make 3 new and improved versions!

Assembly

Three frames were then assembled. The base plate now extended out the front side of the frames and had cutaways to provide footing. The dados were twice as wide for ease of use and the frames were of proper length.

Completion

The frames were then sanded stained and shellacked.
